Digital Analyzer Reader: Streamlining Diagnostics and Information Sharing

By Ara Eckel

From the beginning, JLG’s vision for ClearSky Smart Fleet™ has been to transform traditional telematics into something bigger and better. Our goal was to address real-world challenges in a way that users would say, “I didn’t even realize that could be a better way — until now.”

Because we live in a digital age, it’s now possible to connect to products in a unique way. And that’s what led us to come up with ideas for new and improved ClearSky Smart Fleet features that weren’t even possible not so long ago — like the Digital Analyzer.

For decades, heavy equipment and automotive manufacturers have depended on handheld analyzers for diagnostics, and JLG was no different. Technicians had to plug the 6-ft cord of a handheld analyzer device into our machines to understand what was truly going on “under the hood.” These handheld analyzers could also recode a machine, examine its parameters and reprogram it. While this technology is common in various industries, it’s not the most convenient or user friendly.

We knew we could do better. So, we did.

With the Digital Analyzer feature in the ClearSky Smart Fleet app, you can use your mobile device to check a machine’s status, set up parameters or retrieve other types of information. No expensive handheld unit or cumbersome cord necessary. And to make the Digital Analyzer even easier to use, we modeled much of it on our handheld analyzer’s interface and user experience. That means there’s little to no learning curve when switching from a handheld analyzer to our Digital Analyzer.

However, there was one thing about the handheld analyzer’s user experience that we didn’t want to duplicate — that tiny, two-line display. Looking at a JLG machine's parameters on a handheld analyzer is time consuming and, frankly, a little tedious. Because your phone or tablet screen can display far more than two lines, JLG had a unique opportunity to improve that element of the user experience by leaps and bounds. Now, you can see more data without constantly scrolling and possibly losing your place.

And speaking of that data display, we wanted to evolve it as well. That’s where our newest ClearSky Smart Fleet feature comes in—the Digital Analyzer Reader. This feature allows you to create an easy-to-reference, one-page summary of a machine's set-up, personalities, diagnostics and fault-log data that you can easily download and share with others who need that information.

And there’s more to it. More business is happening on a global scale than ever before, and a tool like ClearSky Smart Fleet’s Digital Analyzer Reader makes it simpler to share information on that same scale.

Here’s how. Many tradespeople worldwide are not fluent in English. If you’re working with associates or customers who speak a different first language, you can now more efficiently take data from the Digital Analyzer Reader and translate it online versus manually translating the codes from the handheld device.

Furthermore, since our Digital Analyzer technology exists online, JLG can launch updates and improvements instantly,  maximizing its iPhone and/or Android capabilities at any time.  It’s just one more way that JLG has taken telematics from the physical world to the digital world with ClearSky Smart Fleet.
